“Every child is an artist.” Pablo Picasso
At Keys Meadow we believe that every child can lift off and soar and strive hard to provide a rich art curriculum. We value the importance of the arts and how it nurtures and develops a child’s creative skills, enriches their life experience and plays an integral part in children’s education. Our art curriculum is designed to excite and inspire all our pupils, whatever their background and ability and expose them to a wide range of current professional practice. Through high quality teaching and the use of a range of equipment and experiences, children will be supported to ‘experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design’ (National Curriculum). We ensure that all children are taught essential artistic skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, collage and printing through well planned and sequential art units. An example of this can be seen on the progressions map below.
Year 2
Year 6
For an overview of the full Art curriculum please see our Keys Meadow Skills overview.
Children have opportunities to apply the learnt artistic skills to communicate fluently in visual and tactile form and to use visual language skilfully and convincingly to express themselves. For our children to see themselves as artists we ensure we provide many opportunities for children to have their art work celebrated and displayed. Please visit some of our exhibitions below to see the amazing art work our children have created.

Throughout their time at Keys Meadow we expose our children to a range of artists, craft-makers and designers which they can draw upon when developing their own ideas. These artists span the ages, use different artistic mediums, are different genders, come from different cultural backgrounds and ensure children see that art is for everyone. During their time with us they will take part in enriching visits to places of artistic and cultural importance including galleries, theatres and concert halls which will stimulate and inspire them as artists. These enriching experiences are part of our Keys Meadow pledge and support children in developing independence, initiative and originality.
In Year 2 we visit the Tate modern to focus on colour in paintings linked to our painting unit.
In Year 4 we visit the Henri Moore Sculpture park to support children’s sculpture unit.
In Year 6 we visit the National Gallery to support our drawing unit.
“Children are naturally creative. It is our job to give them the freedom, materials and space to let their creativity blossom to its full potential.” Jean Van’t Hul
